The Diabetic Foot
DIABETES
There are over 226,000 people in Ireland diagnosed with diabetes (2016) and with the increase in the prevalence of the disease comes an increase in the diabetic foot complications seen with it. Every person who has diabetes, whether Type 1 or Type 2, is recommended to visit a podiatrist at least once a year. In this appointment, the blood flow to the feet and the nerves are assessed and your podiatrist will ask you about any changes in your feet and will also discuss what to keep an eye out for to prevent infection, ulceration and amputation.
Please see http://www.hse.ie/eng/health/hl/living/diabetes/FCmodrisk.pdf for an information leaflet on taking care of your feet when you have diabetes.
